How to Check for Traffic Tickets Online

Getting a traffic ticket can really add to the stress of daily life. You end up worrying about court dates or paying fines. You have a few choices: pay the fine, ignore it, or fight the ticket. The ticket tells you that you need to do something about it. If you forget or lose the ticket, you’ll have to pay even more. To avoid all this, here’s how you can check your traffic tickets online.

Navigating the Motor Vehicles Website

To find your tickets online, you’ll need:

  • Your driving license
  • Your Social Security Number
  • Access to the internet

First, go to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles website (flhsmv.gov).

On the top left of the webpage, click on the “+” next to “Driver Licenses & ID Cards”. We’ve marked it for you.

A menu will pop up. Click on “Driver’s License Check & Identification Tracking System”. It’s the third option on the left.

If you’re using a phone, tap the menu. You’ll find the third option under “Driver Licenses & ID Cards”.

Next, you’ll enter your driver’s license number and solve a captcha. Then, type in the last four digits of your Social Security number to prove it’s really you. Your driving history will show up.

This page tells you about any traffic tickets you’ve got, and if you’ve paid them or not. Now you can decide what to do if you have tickets.

What to Do if You Get a Traffic Ticket

When you get a ticket, you have three choices:

  • Pay the fine
  • Go to traffic school
  • Fight the ticket

Paying the ticket might make your insurance costs go up, and you’ll get points on your license.

Going to traffic school can get your ticket dismissed and might lower your insurance costs, but it costs money and time. Fighting your ticket might be your best choice. Whatever you decide, you have to do it within 30 days of getting your ticket.

What Happens if You Don’t Pay on Time?

Florida is known for giving out a lot of traffic tickets. The state really wants you to pay them as soon as possible. If you don’t pay within 30 days, you’ll be charged more. If you ignore it too long, you could lose your driving license.

If the police stop you and you’re driving with a suspended license, you could even go to jail. It starts with a simple traffic ticket, but ignoring it can lead to big problems.
